The Melk Abbey stands on the bank of the Danube between Salzburg and Vienna. It overlooks the town of Melk and is impressive with its golden ochre towers.

The Benedictine monastic community of Melk is over 900 years old and black-robed monks still stroll amidst the marble sculptures and frescoed walls. It is now also a prestigious co-ed monastery school with more than 900 students.

Today's impressive Baroque builsings were built in 1702-1736 by architect Jakob Prandtauer. Noteworthy is the Church with frescos by Johann Michael Rottmayr and the impressive library with countless medieval manuscripts.

Vienna - City of music, cafes, waltzes, parks, pastries. We spent 3 nights in Vienna and had lots of opportunity to soak up the atmosphere.

Dompfarre St. Stephan, Vienna's cathedral, is one of Europe's great Gothic structures.

The Habsburgs ruled the Austro-Hungarian Empire from their imperial court in Vienna. You can still witness their grandeur as you stroll through the Inner City. The Hofburg, the family's winter palace, is a living architectural textbook, dating from 1279. The Hofburg Palace complex is also home to the Vienna Boy's Choir and the Lipizzaner Museum. We also attended a concert here one evening. When you tire of touring the city you can sit and enjoy coffee along with one of the famous Sachertortes

The 1,441-room Schonbrunn Palace was built between 1696 and 1712 at the request of Emperor Leopold I for his son, Joseph I. Schonbrunn was the imperial summer palace during Maria Theresa's 40-year reign. At the age of 6, Mozart performed in the Hall of Mirrors before Maria Theresa and her court.

Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia is a contrast of styles. High on the hill beside the castle is the ulta-modern parliament building and a view of the new bridge. Down in the old town are quaint coblestone lanes filled with fashionable clubs, restaurants and Viennese style cafes.

Cruising the Main and Danube Rivers - Part 3
Melk to Bratislava

Because of the flooding on the Danube, our river cruise has now become a motor coach tour. We visited Melk with its impressive Baroque Abbey. Then it was on to Vienna where we stayed for 3 nights and enjoyed the ambience and history of this magical city. The next stop was Bratislava in Slovakia with its very beautiful and historic city center by the Danube.
